How Much Should Solar Panels Cost?
The complete guide to $/W, gross vs net pricing, and whether the number in front of you is in the right ballpark.
The federal residential solar tax credit (30% §25D) ended December 31, 2025.
Under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, systems placed in service on or after January 1, 2026 do not qualify for the residential credit. Systems installed and operational by December 31, 2025 can still be claimed at 30% on the 2025 return. Start with $/W — price per watt
The only honest way to compare solar prices is price per watt ($/W): total installed cash price ÷ system size in watts. A 10 kW system at $30,000 is $3.00/W. An 8 kW system at $26,000 is $3.25/W — more expensive per watt even though it costs less in total. Everything else being equal, the lower $/W is the better equipment-for-price deal.
What solar costs nationally in 2026
Planning median: $2.80/W cash, installed, before incentives — with most quotes between $2.50 and $3.20/W. Marketplace data (EnergySage Q1-2026) puts the median near $2.95/W; NREL’s benchmark is closer to $2.62/W — the spread is real and reflects which quotes you include. A typical 8 kW system: ≈$20,000–$28,000 gross. A 10 kW system: ≈$25,000–$35,000.
The federal tax credit is not in these numbers. The residential §25D credit ended 12/31/2025 — for a system you buy in 2026, the federal line is $0. “Gross” and “net” now differ only by verified state/local incentives.

Never compare module prices to installed prices. “Panels cost $0.40/W” refers to hardware alone; the installed price is ~7× that because labor, racking, inverters, permits and margin make up the rest.

Cheaper $/W states (AZ, TX, FL) pair fierce installer competition with simple permitting. Pricier states (MA, NY, HI, parts of CA) carry higher labor, soft costs or logistics. Gross vs net — and why it matters in 2026
Gross = what the installer charges. Net = gross minus incentives you actually receive. Through 2025, buyers subtracted 30% (federal). In 2026 that subtraction is zero for owned systems. So a $28,000 gross 10 kW system is a $28,000 net system (before any state incentive) — not $19,600. If a 2026 quote shows “$19,600 after federal credit,” the math is wrong or the credit is a rebate the installer is quietly absorbing — ask exactly how the discount is funded.
What raises the price (legitimately)
- Roof complexity: tile, standing-seam metal, steep pitch, multi-plane, high roof — +$0.10–0.40/W.
- Electrical work: main-panel or service upgrade, typically $1,500–$4,000 as a separate line.
- Premium equipment: Maxeon/REC-class panels, Enphase IQ8 — typically +10–15% over mainstream.
- Battery: $1,000–$2,000/kWh installed, separate from the solar price.
- Ground mounts: +$0.30–0.60/W over rooftop.
All of these are legitimate. A quote above the state range is not automatically bad — but the installer should be able to point at the reason.
What a fair quote looks like
Within your state’s typical range, with: exact panel model, exact inverter model, an annual production estimate in kWh, warranty terms spelled out (product, performance, workmanship), a line-item cost breakdown, and a clear answer to “what’s the cash price?” Run the quote analyzer on any quote you receive, and read how to compare quotes before signing anything.
The bottom line
Budget ≈ $2.50–$3.20/W cash installed (2026). Compare every quote on $/W and production, not total price. Treat the federal credit as $0 for 2026. And remember: the cheapest price is only the start of the question — the quote that produces and supports the system for 25 years is what you’re actually buying.
